The Joke and Its Relation to the Unconscious
Why do we laugh? The answer argued Freud in this groundbreaking study of humour is that jokes like dreams satisfy our unconscious desires. The Joke and Its Relation to the Unconscious (1905) explains how jokes provide immense pleasure by releasing us from our inhibitions and allowing us to express sexual aggressive playful or cynical instincts that would otherwise remain hidden. In elaborating this theory Freud brings together a rich collection of puns witticisms one-liners and anecdotes many of which throw a vivid light on the society of early twentieth-century Vienna. Jokes as Freud shows are a method of giving ourselves away.

The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories
Collecting uniquely uncanny tales from the master of American horror H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories is edited with an introduction and notes by S.T. Joshi in Penguin Modern Classics. Credited with inventing the modern horror tradition H.P. Lovecraft remade the genre in the early twentieth century. Discarding ghosts and witches and instead envisaging mankind at the mercy of a chaotic and malevolent universe Lovecraft’s unique works would prove to be a huge influence on modern horror writers such as Stephen King. This selection of short stories ranges from early tales of nightmares and insanity such as ‘The Outsider’ and ‘The Rats in the Walls’ through the grotesquely comic ‘Herbert West – Reanimator’ and ‘The Hound’ to the extraterrestrial terror of ‘The Call of Cthulhu’ which fuses traditional supernaturalism with science fiction. Including the definitive corrected texts this collection reveals the development of Lovecraft’s mesmerising narrative style and establishes him as a hugely influential – and visionary – American writer. Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) born in Providence Rhode Island was self-educated and lived in his birthplace all his life working as a freelance writer journalist and ghostwriter. Using many pen names he contributed his supernatural/horror and science fiction/fantasy stories to various pulp magazines but his reputation as a writer rests mainly on the 60 or so stories he published in the pulp magazine Weird Tales starting in 1923.

Interpreting Dreams
By a detailed investigation of the universal phenomenon of dreaming Freud discovered a radical new way of exploring the unconscious and recognized that dreams are a conflict and compromise between conscious and unconscious impulses. Through his insights about dreams Freud was able to revise his methods of treatment for neurotic patients and develop largely through this remarkable work his revolutionary theories of the Oedipus Complex and of the profound importance of infantile life and sexuality for the development of adults.

Empire: How Britain Made the Modern World
Once vast swathes of the globe were coloured imperial red and Britannia ruled not just the waves but the prairies of America the plains of Asia the jungles of Africa and the deserts of Arabia. Just how did a small rainy island in the North Atlantic achieve all this? And why did the empire on which the sun literally never set finally decline and fall? Niall Ferguson’s acclaimed Empire brilliantly unfolds the imperial story in all its splendours and its miseries showing how a gang of buccaneers and gold-diggers planted the seed of the biggest empire in all history – and set the world on the road to modernity.

An Outline of Psychoanalysis

An Outline of Psychoanalysis
No discovery has done more to shape modernity than Freud’s theory of the unconscious and the part it plays in determining the course of our conscious lives. In psychoanalysis Freud created a therapeutic tool by which the deepest anguish and desires of the psyche could be revealed. Yet this vital and rewarding field has remained a mystery to many and the widespread use of its terminology in everyday life can serve only to confuse matters further. New Introductory Lectures (1932) and An Outline of Psychoanalysis (1938) take us back to Freud’s own account of his theories and his wish to be the most lucid and inspiring advocate of psychoanalysis.
